Cliff May, considered the “Father of the California Ranch House”, was both a builder and a pioneer in his era. His passion was building homes that combined indoor comforts with outdoor living, and enjoyed blending the two for a truly cohesive living experience, unfettered by definitive distinctions. As the descendent of an early-California Spanish family and resident of San Diego, his heritage mixed with his parent’s ranch home gave birth to his tastes of combining typical Ranch style with the characteristics of a Spanish hacienda. He actually designed and built his first home when he was only 23! He never officially trained as an architect nor was he ever inducted into the AIA, but I don’t think that would bother him today as one of the most notable architects of Southern California.
