ART BASEL – WOW. Having attended the event 5 years ago, I was amazed at the exponential expansion of the event. The energy that emanated from this event could fuel a nation. Thousands of artists were displayed in many venues of Miami. The main attraction is held in the Florida Convention Hall where the leading galleries of the world showcase their finest artists. If you go, definitely plan on spending at least 8 hours and that alone would barely get you through the main hall.
The additional satellite event featured emerging artists and a chance to purchase their art at reasonable prices. My favorite time was at the new Design district, which has only been developed in recent years. It included top designers alongside art galleries and interior design showcases. I attended an Australian Kiwi arts group which included a display of Google Glass for the first time and participated in an interactive experience with artist David Datuna.
A special afternoon was spent at the Miami Design tent behind the main convention hall. One of the most incredible items was an $100,000 Stuart Haygarth eyeglass masterpiece chandelier pictured here.
One of my more exciting evenings was spent in the Miami botanical gardens viewing the fabulous BMW designed and painted by the famous Jeff Koons. Jeff’s recent painting was auctioned at the highest price ever paid for a living artist. I am featured in the photo having a chat with him about his automate work of art. I am sure the car looks better streaming down the raceway.
The restaurants were packed and top notch. Soho House had a very exclusive tent on the beach which was definitely the place to be. One incredible evening was spent at “Live” which is the amazing night club at Fontainebleau. It does not close until 4am and definitely includes a crowd not preoccupied with art!
Additionally, the salons, artist discussions, and books signings looked terrific but sadly I didn’t have enough time to participate. Some of my favorite paintings were included.
Finally, to top off an absolutely amazing trip was the fantastic Miami sunset from my suite at the Fontainebleau tower. What a week!
